The Kallamino Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Center is an initiative conceived by Mr. Mark I. Gelfand, an American citizen and the principal sponsor of the Center.
Recognizing the strong academic potential and keen interest of Kallamino Special High School (KSHS) students in STEM fields, the Tigray Development Association (TDA) actively sought development partners with a demonstrated commitment to expanding STEM education in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia and beyond. In this regard, the Gelfand Family Charitable Trust (GFCT) emerged as a natural and strategic partner.
Following productive consultations and the preparation of detailed proposals, the Kallamino STEM Center was established in 2011, located approximately seven kilometers south of Mekelle. The Center officially commenced operations under GFCT’s guiding motto, “Inside every child is a scientist.” It began its activities with four specialized laboratories: Optics, Mechanics, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology (IT).
Vision
To develop a model Science and Engineering Center dedicated to identifying and nurturing high-potential scientists and engineers from an early stage.
Mission
To advance science education by integrating an enriched curriculum with experiential learning that nurtures students’ interest, capability, and innovation in science and engineering.
Objective
The Kallamino STEM Center comprises four integrated units—Optics, Mechanics, Electronics & Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology. Through the coordinated use of these units, the Center aims to lead and support experimentation, innovation, and hands-on training. Its objective is to enable students to design and implement projects and innovations that connect theoretical learning with practical application, while also supporting science instruction across the school, particularly in the natural sciences. Overall, the Center is responsible for providing students with diverse, enriched learning experiences in science and engineering.
